Liposuction

Despite a healthy diet and regular exercise, there are some areas of our bodies that collect deposits of fat. Liposuction is a procedure for removing these areas of fatty tissue that has been used to contour body for both men and women for many years. It can remove disproportionate areas of fat on an otherwise healthy body.

The best candidates for liposuction are in good health and have reasonably firm, elastic skin. Liposuction is not intended to treat obesity in and of itself. Neither should liposuction be considered a substitute for diet and exercise. But it can be a very effective way to improve body contours and help change the way one presents and sees one's self.

Liposuction has been most commonly performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, and flanks or "love handles". It has also been helpful in removing fatty deposits in the upper arms, back, face, and neck.

Tumescent Liposuction

Dr. Carroll Zahorsky has performed hundreds of liposuction procedures over the last several years utilizing the traditional tumescent liposuction technique for patients in his Kansas City area practice.

Balanced tumescent solutions combined with local anesthesia and epinephrine to minimize blood loss are injected into the fatty areas to create the tumescent effect to facilitate effective removal of the greatest amount of fat possible with the patient under general anesthesia. Up until recently, tumescent liposuction has been the safest, most consistently effective liposuction technique available. Below you can learn about SmartLipo™ and LipoSelection®, both of which are newer, more advanced, and more effective liposuction techniques.

SmartLipo™ (Laser Liposuction)

SmartLipo™ is a revolutionary advance in laser liposuction technology recently approved by the FDA and allows for the removal of unwanted fat with minimal "down time."

SmartLipo™ promotes tissue tightening through tissue coagulation. It is a minimally invasive procedure. The instrumentation is small. The incisions are small. The photo-mechanical effects of the laser disrupts fat cells which results in breakdown of the fat to become an oil that can be aspirated. The photo-thermal effect causes tissue coagulation and results in tissue tightening. There is less bleeding and trauma than with other liposuction techniques. The procedure is safer and gentler than traditional liposuction and is being performed with local anesthetic.

SmartLipo™, described by many as "magic", differs from traditional liposuction by means of a small, high-powered laser that precisely sculpts the area being treated. Additionally, the laser's thermal energy produces a tightening effect on the overlying skin, often reducing the need for additional invasive surgeries to remove excess skin. The outpatient procedure takes one to two hours to perform depending on the number of areas being addressed. The procedure is performed while the patient remains comfortably awake. There is a quicker recovery period compared to traditional liposuction. Patients may return to normal activity with some procedures as early as the same afternoon and with most all procedures by the next day depending on how many areas are being treated.

SmartLipo™ delivers more immediate and satisfying results than the lipodissolve or mesotherapy injection procedures without leaving any residual foreign substance in the body needing to be eliminated.

VASER® LipoSelection®

The VASER® LipoSelection® system uses ultrasound energy to break up and emulsify fat, leaving surrounding tissue, such as nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, relatively intact.

This LipoSelection® system can be utilized effectively to fragment deeper fat. When performed in conjunction with SmartLipo™, LipoSelection® can help achieve the best possible contouring and removal of unwanted fat.

In addition, the aspiration component of the this system makes it possible to aspirate the residual fatty oil from the fragmented fat achieved by the VASER® and the burning of fat achieved by SmartLipo™. This combination of effects makes it possible to achieve the best outcomes in the removal of fat and contouring process.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a popular procedure at our Johnson County office, serving the Kansas City Metropolitan area and surrounding communities. Abdominoplasty is used to create a more proportionate and desirable abdominal appearance. For many, their abdominal area simply no longer responds to diet and exercise. With abdominoplasty, we can provide a firmer, flatter stomach for such patients.

Abdominoplasty can tighten the abdominal skin as well as the abdominal muscle wall. The abdominal fat pad can also be removed. Stretch marks that are below the level of the upper portion of the incision can be removed entirely. The stretch marks above that level can be advanced to a lower position on the abdominal wall, allowing patients to feel more comfortable wearing clothes that reveal the abdomen. A trimmer waist can be created to help the way a person's clothes fit, and give them a broader selection of clothes they can wear. The most beneficial result, however, of abdominoplasty is that it stimulates the improvement of body awareness and sparks self-image improvement.

It is not unusual following pregnancy to have loose skin of the abdomen, weak abdominal musculature, or unsightly stretch marks. Undoubtedly, many of these residual problems could be prevented with better, more attentive physical care throughout the pregnancy, as well as during the immediate post-pregnancy period. Unfortunately, this is not the usual practice during or after pregnancy, and a woman is left with abdominal problems needing surgical attention.

Obesity or excessive weight followed by significant weight loss can result in findings similar to those with pregnancy. Most of these individuals' problems could also be avoided by preventative measures. Adequate and proper exercise, good nutrition, and attitude reorientation are excellent means of avoiding the ravages of obesity.

When these problems have not been prevented, or when realistic attempts to prevent or correct them have failed, abdominoplasty can offer dramatic improvement.

Abdominoplasty Technique

There are really three components to the abdominal problem: skin, subcutaneous fatty tissue (beneath the skin), and the abdominal muscles with their associated fascial linings.

Abdominoplasty incisions vary, depending on individual circumstances. However, the most generally accepted approach for producing excellent results in reference to incision placement and subsequent cover-up by clothing is an incision that extends across the lower abdomen onto the sides of the legs in the form of a lazy 'W'. Once the incision is made, excess skin and tissue are removed, muscles are tightened, and the procedure is complete.

After abdominoplasty, it is imperative that the patient remains inactive to promote proper and rapid healing. Dr. Carroll Zahorsky uses advanced techniques, however, to reduce recovery time and discomfort to an absolute minimum.

Buttock and Thigh Sculpting

Excess fatty tissue of the inner and outer thighs and buttock take away from the beautiful lines of a woman's body. They also interfere with the way her clothes fit. Many women are so self-conscious of these fat pads that it affects their self-confidence and self-esteem.

An adequate and proper exercise program can prevent and correct a major portion of buttocks and thigh fat pads. For those who have difficulty correcting their problem, surgery offers hope. Body sculpting of the buttocks and thighs can give considerable improvement to your physical appearance and your self-image. Contact Dr. Carroll Zahorsky to discover the benefits of body sculpting.

Upper Arm Lift and Reduction

Many women have gone to buy a new dress only to find they cannot wear it because their upper arms are too big for the garment. Other women wear medium length or long-sleeve dresses to cover the hanging skin and fat of the upper arms because of their embarrassment. These are only a couple of the problems that people having excess skin and fatty tissue of the upper arms encounter routinely. Unfortunately, once this problem has developed, there is almost no way to eliminate it without surgical intervention.

Fatty tissue can be removed in some cases with intensive weight loss efforts, but the excess skin and a portion of the fat will always remain. It is for reasons such as these that most people seek surgical reduction of the fatty tissue and skin of the upper arms.

Upper Arm Reduction Techniques

There is no ideal placement for an incision on the upper arm because of its visibility with various normal movements of the arm. The most acceptable location for the scar is on the inner area of the arm. It is placed approximately two-thirds of the way back on the arm when the patient is holding his or her arms out from his or her body. Many times, there will be depression in this area between the muscle compartments for more specific demarcation. The incision most always will need to extend from the area of the elbow along the inner arm into the area of the axilla (arm pit). It will then be possible to remove an adequate and proper amount of fatty tissue and skin to tighten the upper arm skin and tissues. This will eliminate excess hanging or sagging skin and fat.

Reasonable restriction of activities involving the arms is necessary for one to two weeks. Dr. Zahorsky will work with you throughout the entire procedure and recovery process to ensure you have a comfortable experience. Once healing is complete, you will enjoy healthy, youthful arms.
