Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

The eyes are among the most emphasized features of our facial structure. Most people look into the eyes of another person numerous times every day. If you have saggy, loose skin around your eyelids, you may appear more tired or older than you feel. As the aging process advances, the wrinkles and bags will continue to show up. At RÉ SURGENCE in Leawood, we offer blepharoplasty as the only sure means of correcting the bags of loose skin around the eyes.

The loss of skin elasticity is responsible for the redundant loose skin around the eyelids. This loose skin of the eyelids, along with the herniated fatty tissue of the lower eyelid area and above the upper eyelid area, are primary contributing factors to bags around the eyes.

Blepharoplasty is also performed at our Kansas City Metropolitan area practice to relieve peripheral visual impairment and/or eyestrain. A hooding effect from the excessive redundant skin of the upper eyelids can impair peripheral vision. The increased weight of this excess tissue can also cause a heavy eyelid feeling, which contributes to eyestrain. It is true that most blepharoplasty is performed for appearance improvement, but the functional component is present in many people and can simultaneously be corrected with great success.

The primary goal of blepharoplasty is to create a neater, more youthful appearance to the eyelids and face. With advanced techniques and Dr. Zahorsky's cosmetic surgery experience, every blepharoplasty procedure at our Kansas City area practice is performed with the utmost care and precision to produce excellent results.

Blepharoplasty Techniques

The principles of successful blepharoplasty revolve around excising enough, but not too much, skin and removing fatty tissue. Conservative eyelid surgery is the wisest approach, as it is always better to have done too little rather than too much.

During eyelid surgery, placement of the incisions is of special importance. There are normal, acceptable eye lines on the eyelids, and these lines aid in determining incision location. Some surgeons believe in following these lines almost completely. Other plastic surgeons believe in altering the incision to partially cross the lines, particularly with eyelid surgery of the upper outer eyelid, by curving the incisions upward and outward in this area. The latter surgeons believe this allows for more complete removal of excess skin in the area, gives better incision placement cosmetically, and will help achieve the youthful or open-eye look more successfully. Dr. Zahorsky will discuss the incision placement options during your blepharoplasty consultation.
